SUSTAINABILITY POLICY STATEMENT

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Philippines, the prudent registrar and supervisor of the corporate sector, and the independent guardian of the capital market, fully advocates sustainability in all aspects of its functions. Sustainability, defined as a “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations,” poses risks and opportunities for all, hence, the need for the Commission to promote initiatives to manage anticipated risks and seize opportunities that could affect the corporate sector, as well as the capital market.

2023 ACHIEVEMENTS

UNICEF Baseline Study Recognizes Integration of Children’s Rights in PLCs Disclosures

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Philippines continues to advance its commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable business practices. Since 2019, the SEC has required all publicly listed companies (PLCs) to submit annual Sustainability Reports alongside their Annual Reports.

In support of the Commission’s efforts, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), commissioned a baseline study assessing the extent to which children’s rights are reflected in the sustainability disclosures of PLCs. The study reviewed 86 publicly available 2023 sustainability reports, representing around 30% of total submissions. It aims to establish baseline evidence on child rights-related disclosures, and forms part of UNICEF Philippines’ broader advocacy to integrate children’s rights into national policies, legislation, and mechanisms on responsible business conduct.

The SEC welcomes the findings of the study and reaffirms its support for mainstreaming children’s rights in sustainability reporting. The Commission remains committed to working with partners in promoting inclusive and rights-based approaches to ESG and corporate governance practices in the Philippines.
